Karen Eastman (American,
born 1964) grew up “always creating something” from
a very early age. This need to express herself came out in
her drawings and paintings and turned into a life long passion
for the arts. She studied at the University of Colorado,
in Boulder, where she received a BA in Humanities with a
minor in Art History. Upon graduating, she enjoyed a career in
retail merchandising, but soon realized that she had gotten away
from her true calling, which was to create art. She then
started her own ceramics business where she could help to nurture
the creativity of others as well as her own.
Over the last several years, Karen
has begun to establish herself in the art community. She
has enjoyed many successes ranging from participating in large
art shows to landing several commissions from the National Institute
of Health in Washington DC. Her paintings hang in many homes
throughout San Diego as well as in Chicago, Idaho, Texas, and Maryland.
Karen’s paintings are very
expressionistic, and represent her interest in the relationship
between the human spirit and how it is embodied in the forms found
in nature. She especially loves the metaphors found in the beauty
of the tree. One of her favorite artists is Georgia O’Keefe
because of the sensuality and feminine beauty of her abstract landscapes.
Karen likes to paint segments, or a close up perspective
of a natural form to help the viewer look deeper into that world. The
experience then becomes more intimate. She says, “Painting
is very cathartic for me. I create my compositions from the
inside out, depicting what I experience, as opposed to what I physically
see in front of me.”
